Apocalypse looms in this darkly moving musical at the SummerWorks Performance Festival
Presented by Ante Up Productions
Written by Victoria Houser, Emily Nixon, Drew O'Hara, Zach Parkhurst and Jake Vanderham
Music and lyrics by Jake Vanderham
Directed by Esther Jun
Now playing at the SummerWorks Performance Festival, the group-written musical And Now, The End tells the story of a Canadian town awaiting certain death as an approaching astroid threatens to obliterate Earth.
While the world outside turns to chaos, best friends Dan (Paolo Santalucia) and Scott (Jeff Yung) try to connect the community via their local radio show. Students Clare (Ruth Goodwin) and her childhood pal Johnny (Hugh Ritchie) grapple with life propects after graduation. Cathy (Tamara Bernier Evans), a delusional housewife waits for her astronaut husband's return from space while her new lover, Frances (Troy Adams), attemps to fill the missing man's shoes. And a lonely doctor (Amir Haidar) finds himself caring for the widowed and pregnant Inez (Kaleigh Gorka) as she prepares for childbirth.
Featuring a haunting score and memorable lyrics by Jake Vanderham, And Now, The End is a heartwrenching exploration of human vulnerability in a cruel and indifferent universe. While Esther Jun's production is still finding its legs, the show has plenty of strong points, including stand-out performances by Bernier Evans, Ritchie and Gorka.
And Now, The End runs until August 17 at Theatre Passe Muraille as part of the SummerWorks Performance Festival. Visit summerworks.ca for more information and to buy tickets.
