"I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance." ― E.E.Cummings
The Global Cabaret Festival’s seventh annual celebration of music and theatrical excellence kicked off on Thursday night with (re)Birth: E.E. Cummings in Song, a cabaret that brings the poetry of E.E. Cummings to life in an eclectic collection of music that sparkles with magic.
Piano, fiddle, accordion, guitar, bass, oboe, flute, tin whistle, bells, xylophone, toy keyboard, and a plastic frog (not a typo) are probably only half of the instruments played by the cast of 10 performers, including Soulpepper resident artists Ins Choi, Raquel Duffy, Gregory Prest and Mike Ross, who collaborated to create the show. The music is beautiful, lively, and silly.
(re)Birth: E.E. Cummings in Song is beautifully staged with a canvas canopy and creative lighting that transforms the space from song to song into a kitchen party, a silent film, a clear starry night, and more. Audience members will leave this quirky cabaret with smiles on their faces and joy in their hearts.
The Global Cabaret Festival lineup is composed of songbooks, features, and cabarets, encompassing a wide range of theatrical themes and forms including jazz, pop, opera, musical theatre and the best of classic cabaret standards. The Festival lineup includes performances from Molly Johnson, Judith Lander, Sharron Matthews, Sophie Milman, Jackie Richardson, and Denzal Sinclaire to name a few.
The Global Cabaret Festival runs from October 23 to 26 at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available by calling the Young Centre Box Office at 416.866.8666 or online at globalcabaret.ca. (re)Birth: E.E. Cummings in Song show dates: Oct 25 at 6:45pm, Oct 25 at 9:30pm.
