The Heidi Chronicles
Michelle Monteith shines in Soulpepper's timely revival
Presented by Soulpepper Theatre Company
Written by Wendy Wasserstein
Directed by Gregory Prest
Wendy Wasserstein's Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Heidi Chronicles was ahead of it's time when it premiered in 1988. Now on stage as part of Soulpepper's current season, the story still resonates powerfully today as women continue to struggle with the notion of "having it all."
The comedy follows Heidi Holland (Michelle Monteith) from a 1960’s teen to 1980’s career woman, encountering many changing social norms and fashion trends along the way. We see Heidi mature along with those closest to her—including her oldest friend and fellow feminist Susan Johnston (Sarah Wilson), her gay best friend Peter Patrone (Damien Atkins), and her former flame Scoop Rosenbaum (Jordan Pettle).
Directed by Gregory Prest, this fresh and heartfelt production features funny and moving performances across the board. Monteith's Heidi, the slightly awkward art historian passionate about carving out a place for women in art, is a joy to watch throughout. Her relatable approach to the role brings the audience comfortably into the fold of Heidi's personal world, and we genuinely care about how it all turns out.
Beautifully staged with clever costumes by Erika Connor and detailed set design by Ken MacKenzie, this show is an entertaining journey through the decades complete with a nostalgic soundtrack by composer and sound designer Verne Good.
The Heidi Chronicles runs until June 24 at the Young Centre for for the Performing Arts. Visit soulpepper.ca for more information and to buy tickets.
