Interview|Evil Dead: The Musical
Alison Smyth spills her guts about the return of Toronto's favourite demonic musical
Produced by Starvox Entertainment in association with Jeffrey Latimer Entertainment
Created by George Reinblatt, Frank Cipolla, Melissa Morris and Christopher Bond
Directed by Christopher Bond
Based on the popular horror film franchise, Evil Dead: The Musical tells the outrageous story of five college friends who spend the weekend in an abandoned cabin where they are struck by evil forces and transformed into demons. The original Canadian production opened in 2003 at the Tranzac Club, with 150 productions eventually presented in cities around the world.
This Halloween, the Dora Audience Choice Award-winning zany zombie comedy returns to Toronto for a limited engagement at the newly renovated Gothic-style Randolph Theatre. We caught up with Evil Dead: The Musical's Alison Smyth (Jersey Boys, Hairspray, Anne of Green Gables) to find out more about this blood-splattered production.
Theatromania: Tell us about Evil Dead: The Musical. How did you become involved with the show?
AS: Evil Dead: The Musical is a very clever, low-brow stage production featuring lots of gore, comedy, music, sweet dance moves and fighting. My involvement began in February 2008 as the hero’s sister Cheryl.
Theatromania: Were you a fan of the film franchise?
AS: Before my late 2007 audition, I was unaware of the Evil Dead phenom. In order to prepare for my audition I rented the original Evil Dead movie to get into the groove of it. I have been a fan ever since!
Theatromania: How would you describe your character in a few sentences?
AS: Cheryl is an observant, outspoken and truthful individual. She generally pays attention to her surroundings and secretly views herself as a super-heroine. She is frustrated with Scott’s constant tormenting but is too self-conscious to really rage after him. Because of Cheryl’s violation by the forest, she joins the “dark army of evil Candarian demons." My demon is a jokester with an appetite who loves to torment her victims.
Theatromania: Has the production changed much since it was last in Toronto?
AS: The production has changed in terms of casting, choreography, fighting, sets, props, blood, costumes, hair and makeup. Whew!
Theatromania: What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered during the rehearsal process?
AS: Body aches! I am still figuring out what is required of my physical body to perform this show effectively and consistently.
Theatromania: The Splatter Zone (first three rows) are highly coveted seats. What advice do you have for people sitting in this section?
AS: Wear white! And if you try to hide, Ryan Ward (Ash) will come after you.
