Jack Your Body
Members of Mix Mix Dance Collective strike a pose in this electrifying urban dance-off
Presented by Mix Mix Dance Collective
Choreographed and directed by Emily Law and Ashley Perez
The energy is contagious in Mix Mix Dance Collective's Jack Your Body, a turbo-charged throwback to American street dance culture now playing at the 2014 Next Stage Theatre Festival.
A hit with audiences at the 2013 Toronto Fringe, the show explores the evolution of underground dances from the 70s-90s (remember Soul Train?), and touches on issues of race, gender and social class, as the stylish cast of performers show off their phenomenal skills, strutting, waacking and jacking across the stage in a dizzying array of colourful costumes with attitude to spare.
Starring choreographers Emily Law and Ashley Perez, the production also features some of Toronto's hottest dance talent, including Ashley Jasmyn Fyffe, Kevin Fraser, Kristine Flores, Sze-Yang Lam, Sarah Tumaliaun and Jelani Ade Douglas.
The crowd is encouraged to cheer for their favourite dancer personas, and won't be able to stop themselves from moving in their seats throughout the performance.
Rating: fabulous with a capital F.
Jack Your Body runs until January 19 at Factory Theatre Mainspace as part of the Next Stage Theatre Festival. Visit fringetoronto.com for more information and to buy tickets.
