Talent shines bright in The Second City's Fall 2014 Mainstage Revue Rebel Without a Cosmos, the astronomically amusing comedy created and performed by Ashley Botting, Allison Price, Sarah Hillier, Connor Thompson, Etan Muskat and Kevin Whalen.
Touching on everything from inappropriate selfies to tweeting astronauts and feminist rappers, Rebel Without a Cosmos pokes a witty finger at today's culture of over-sharing. Throw in some local Toronto humour (killer raccoons, an emergency at Ripley's Aquarium, and a blowhard chief of police), and you've got yourself a soaring satire that probes humanity's obsession with being at the centre of the universe (this concept is depicted brilliantly in a sketch involving a support group for extreme personalities).
Camellia Koo's cosmic set creates the perfect backdrop for this fun, fast-paced and cleverly staged production. Director Reid Janisse allows the ensemble room to play with the material: Thompson, in particular, steals a couple of scenes as a fast-talking savant from Owen Sound; Botting is terrific in her various roles, including Miss Average Canada, and Kevin Whalen gets big laughs as a stoned youth voter.
Catch this comic comet while it's in town. Rebel Without a Cosmos runs until January, 2015 at The Second City Theatre - 51 Mercer Street, Toronto. Box Office: 416-343-0011. Visit secondcity.com for more information and to buy tickets.
