On the weekend of January 11, 2004, American monologist Spalding Gray ended his life by jumping off the Staten Island Ferry in New York.

This month, acclaimed Canadian playwright and Governor General Award-winner Daniel MacIvor brings Spalding's story to life in his solo show Who Killed Spalding Gray?, on stage June 20 and 21 as part of the 7 Monologues series at the Luminato Festival. In the play, MacIvor weaves a fictional connection between Gray's life and his own.

Toronto's ninth annual Luminato Festival takes over the city this month for a colourful celebration of arts and culture. The 10-day multi-arts schedule (June 19 - 28) features local, national and international artists, and includes a diverse offering of music, theatre, dance, visual arts, film and literature. Plus, in a nod to the upcoming Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, this season's programming features daily concerts, literary talks, free family-friendly events and food all inspired by different Pan American countries.

What do a stylish cow, a stage diva, a cross-dressing military man, an Albertan house wife and a couple of crazy clowns have in common? They are all characters in Ronnie Burkett’s latest show, on stage now at the Berkeley Street Theatre as part of this year’s Luminato Festival. Inspired by the illegal underground “daisy” puppet shows of Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, The Daisy Theatre is a mostly improvised production hosted by Burkett with a resident company of more than 30 marionettes.

Montreal-based Lemieux Pilon 4D Art opened Luminato's fifth season last night with the English premiere of La Belle et la Bête: A Contemporary Retelling. Now playing at the Bluma Appel Theatre in the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, this breathtaking adaptation of the classic fairy tale uses 3D technology to create a virtual reality where the actors interact with projected scenery and other forms on stage.
